A Closer Look at the Townhome and Condo Project Planned For Capitol Hill Schoolhouse

A developer’s plan to turn a 2.13-acre site in Capitol Hill into 41 townhomes and 40 condos is moving forward at the Board of Zoning Adjustment (BZA) this month. Insight Property Group provided UrbanTurf with renderings on the portion of the project requiring BZA approval.

Insight and Federal Capital Partners are working with Maurice Walters Architects, SK&I Architects and Quinn Evans Architects on the design for the former schoolhouse site at 13th and D Streets SE (map).

Buchanan School Redevelopment

Insight Property Group plans on building 34 townhomes and 36 condos on a 2.13-acre site, now the Buchanan School property, on Capitol Hill. Insight wants to preserve the two oldest school buildings and turn them into condos, with unit sizes ranging from studios and one-bedrooms to larger two- and three-bedroom units.

HPRB Approves Town Center East Redevelopment Plans

Last Thursday, developer The Bernstein Companies and architect Maurice Walters presented their updated plans for Town Center East to the Historic Preservation Review Board (HPRB), and the plans met with the board’s approval.

What is in the works for Town Center East, located at 1001 and 1101 3rd Street SW (map), has been adjusted significantly since last spring, when the original buildings were designated as historically significant by HPRB. Since then, The Bernstein Companies has been working with the Historic Preservation Office to come up with a development plan that protects the buildings and grounds, which were designed by I.M. Pei.

Duball has retained the Paradigm Cos. as its general contractor for the project, which was designed by Maurice Walters Architect Inc. The nine-story building, which will include about 3,000 square feet of ground-floor retail, is salted for completion in the third quarter of 2016.
