Arts Walk at Brookland Works

Brookland, Washington, DC

Located adjacent to the Brookland–Catholic University Metro Station, Arts Walk is a central element of the five-block Monroe Street Market redevelopment. The project introduces a new pedestrian street linking Monroe Street to a plaza and the Metro entrance, transforming previously underused land around the station into an active public place.

The Arts Walk is lined with 27 artist studios and small retail spaces, each with large roll-up glass fronts that allow creative activity to extend into the pedestrian corridor. Anchored by a public piazza, the space supports community events such as the neighborhood farmers market and has become a gathering place for Brookland’s growing arts community. Four stories of residential apartments rise above the studios, creating a lively mix of living, working, and public space.

The project also incorporates a segment of the Metropolitan Branch Trail and establishes a strong visual identity through a steel tower in the plaza bearing the words Arts Walk, along with 15-foot-tall “BROOKLAND” lettering facing the Metro tracks that announces arrival to the neighborhood.
