PenPlace
Pentagon City, VA
Located on the blocks bounded by South Fern Street, 12th Street South, South Eads Street, and the planned 11th Street South in Pentagon City, this unbuilt project envisioned two mixed-use residential buildings linked by a central public plaza. Together, the buildings were designed to include approximately 300 residential units and 39,000 square feet of ground-floor retail.
Each block was composed of multiple façade types, ranging from traditional to industrial to modern, to create a varied and pedestrian-scaled streetscape. A second-level roof terrace overlooking the plaza offered an elevated community space and visual connection between the two buildings.
The project received approval through Arlington County’s 4.1 Site Plan Process. The site was later purchased by Amazon and is now home to Amazon’s HQ2 campus. MWA served as design architect for the adjacent building, The Bartlett.
