Hamilton Courtyard at Colgate University

Hamilton, NY

Situated within a triangular urban space framed by Utica Street and Madison Street, the Hamilton Courtyard transforms a previously underutilized service area into an active, shared outdoor destination at the heart of the Hamilton Village Core Mixed Use Development. Bounded by 18 Utica, 10–14 Utica Street, and 5 Madison Street, and along side MWA project The Kendrick, the project reimagines the backs and edges of existing buildings as an opportunity to create a cohesive, vibrant courtyard environment.

The design focuses on activating the courtyard through thoughtful site improvements and architectural interventions that support both daily use and community gathering. New paving extends the public realm across the site, establishing a unified ground plane that connects adjacent buildings while accommodating outdoor seating and flexible tenant use. Carefully integrated elements, such as defined seating zones, new historical graphics, and accessible pathways provide placemaking and maintain an open, inviting atmosphere.
